The opening of Cuba’s embassy in Washington, D.C., as well as that of the American embassy in Havana, is expected to be officially announced next week, amid warming relations between the two countries, ABC reports citing sources close to Cuba-US negotiations.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The announcements should come from the capitals after Cuba is removed from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism – something that is expected to happen on Friday, the sources told ABC on Wednesday.

Last week, US Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Roberta Jacobson told journalists that the United States and Cuba were "much closer" to reestablishing relations and reopening embassies.

The announcement was made following a meeting of Cuban and US diplomats in Washington, D.C.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were cut off in 1961. In December 2014, US President Barack Obama announced plans to normalize relations with Cuba.

On May 12, Cuban leader Raul Castro announced that Havana and Washington will exchange ambassadors after May 29, 2015.
