Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts will continue his battle to restore the death penalty after the state legislature repealed it on Wednesday, Equal Justice USA Executive Director Shari Silberstein told Sputnik.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, Ricketts vetoed legislation that would repeal the death penalty in Nebraska. However, the state legislature over-rode that veto the following day.

“I’m sure the governor will continue to issue his press statements and say what he thinks on the issue,” Silberstein said on Wednesday. “The governor still talks about antiquated policies from the ‘90s’.”

Silberstein said that Ricketts’ views on the death penalty isolated him from many conservative Republican legislators across the United States who actively oppose capital punishment.

“The governor is using outdated language, and is not in touch with where conservatives are going.”

Equal Justice USA is a national grassroots organization focused on building a fair and effective criminal justice system, according to the organization’s website.
