A Republican from Illinois, Hastert has been charged by the DOJ and Internal Revenue Service for illegally transferring funds in a scheme known as “structuring,” which is used to evade Currency Transaction Reports.

As part of the indictment, Hastert is accused of paying one individual $3.5 million to cover past misdeeds against that person, making those payments in smaller than $10,000 installments so as to avoid detection.
He then lied about these withdrawals to federal investigators.
The details of the misdeeds and their victims have not been revealed.
Hastert spent 20 years in the House of Representatives before succeeding Newt Gingrich as Speaker of the House in 1999. He retired after the Democrats took control of the House in the 2006 elections.
