WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – In December 2014, the US House Oversight and Government Reform Committee announced that eight senior IRS officials, including Lerner, had failed to prevent or stop the IRS from illegally targeting conservative Americans for tax audits.
The Committee reviewed more than 1.3 million pages of documents and conducted 52 interviews with IRS, as well as the Treasury and Justice department employees, some of which publicly explained how politics influenced IRS decision-making.
“It is outrageous that despite having evidence right at their fingertips, the Department of Justice has refused to investigate potential criminal acts taken by Lois Lerner at the IRS,” Boehner said on Thursday.
“The administration’s silence on this targeting might as well imply its consent of these abusive actions.”
Boehner noted the findings show that IRS officials targeted conservative Americans as a result of their political beliefs, and abused government power while enforcing the US tax code.
“The American people deserve the truth as to how the IRS was used as a political tool to target and harass Americans for their beliefs.”
Boehner also called on the newly confirmed Attorney General Loretta Lynch to take action against Lerner.
