WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — In 2012, US President Barack Obama created the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) programs, allowing illegal immigrant youths to have a social security number, a two-year work permit, and protection from deportation.
“The [Nebraska] Legislature’s decision to provide driver licenses and state identification cards to illegal immigrants is an inappropriate benefit to non-citizens,” Ricketts said.
Earlier on Thursday, the Nebraska Legislature overrode Ricketts’ veto of a bill which will grant driver licenses and identification cards to individuals who qualify for DACA.
Ricketts argued, however, that the new Nebraskan legislation will allow to grant driver licenses to “any illegal immigrant who has ‘approved deferred action status,’ and not just the young adults many senators intended to help.”
On Wednesday, the Nebraska state legislature repealed the death penalty in the state by over-riding a veto exercised by Governor Ricketts.
