American Express chief Ed Gilligan fell seriously ill and died Friday on a flight home to New York, the US financial corporation said.

MOSCOW, May 30 (Sputnik) — The 55-year-old executive was on a business trip when he suddenly became ill. The plane was forced to make an emergency landing but it was too late, US media reported.

American Express CEO Ken Chenault wrote in a letter to employees the news of Gilligan’s death was "deeply painful and frankly unimaginable." "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Lisa, and their four children," he wrote.

Ed Gilligan devoted his entire career to American Express, starting as an intern 35 years ago and moving steadily up all the way to vice chairman in 2007 and president in 2013.
