It was not immediately clear whether the blast at the Dailami Air Base, which shares structures with the airport, has left any casualties, but the source told Sputnik people living in neighboring homes began leaving en masse.
A Saudi-led coalition conducting airstrikes against Shiite Houthi targets in the country since March 26 struck the airport and the air base in late April.
Violence has engulfed Yemen over the last several months as the country's largest opposition group, the Houthis, are in the midst of fighting President-in-exile Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, who had requested the coalition's assistance.
Despite the military campaign dubbed Operation Decisive Storm giving way to Operation Restoring Hope in April, coalition airstrikes have continued in the country.
According to the most recent estimates by the World Health Organization, almost 2,000 people have been killed and more than 8,000 injured in Yemen since the conflict escalated in March.
