The World Health Organization issues a statement in advance of World No Tobacco Day saying that one in 10 tobacco products are illegal, a health, legal and economic concern.

"One in every 10 cigarettes, and many other tobacco products, consumed worldwide are illegal, making the illicit trade of tobacco products a major global concern from many perspectives, including health, legal, economic, governance and corruption," The WHO states in its latest report.

The WHO report blasted criminal groups as well as the tobacco industry for profiting from illegal tobacco, "leaving the public to pay the health and security costs."

The WHO is campaigning for governments to ratify the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products to "respond to the financial, legal and health impacts of the illicit trade of tobacco products."

The first World No Tobacco Day s observed around the world every year on May 31. It is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe
