Earlier in the day, Kerry was flown to a hospital in Geneva after breaking his leg in a cycling accident near the town of Scionzier, close to Geneva, where Kerry held nuclear talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif Saturday.
"The Secretary very much regrets not being able to visit Spain to meet with one of our close allies for discussions on a range of issues, as well as being unable to attend the counter-IS [Islamic State jihadist group] coalition ministerial meeting on Tuesday in Paris in person," Kirby said.
The spokesman added that Kerry will be transferred to Boston to seek treatment with the doctor who had performed a prior surgery on his hip.
Kerry was set to travel to Madrid later in the day to meet with King Felipe VI, President Mariano Rajoy, and Foreign Minister Jose Garcia-Margallo. Kerry was expected to sign the agreement allowing the US military to permanently deploy 3,000 troops at the military base at Moron de la Frontera, near Seville in southern Spain for the purposes of deployment on missions to Africa.
On June 2, he was to visit Paris to lead the US delegation during the ministerial meeting to discuss progress of the anti-IS campaign.
