"Judging by the figures, the result [of the local elections] is good. Members of the Democratic Party won in five out of seven regions. It does not mean that we should relax. It proves that the policy that the government pursues is the right one," Gentiloni, who is a member of the Democratic Party, said at a press conference following talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
The Italian foreign minister hailed the results despite the Democratic Party suffering a setback in the election.
According to preliminary results, the ruling party secured just over 22 percent of the votes across the seven regions, closely followed by the anti-establishment Five-Star Movement on just under 20 percent.
The regionalist Northern League party finished third after winning some 13 percent of the votes, with the center-right Forza Italia in fourth.
Both the Five-Star and Northern League parties are eurosceptic.
In 2013, the Democratic Party landed an outright majority in the Italian parliament in the general election.
