MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — As many as five people were killed in north-central Mexico as a small plane crashed on a major federal highway, Mexico’s Communications and Transport Ministry said in a statement.
The accident occurred Tuesday on Mexico City-Queretaro highway section shortly after the aircraft left the airport of Queretaro to perform a test flight. The reasons of the crash are still unknown, according to the ministry.
A preliminary version suggested that the pilot was trying to make an emergency landing on the highway, but lost control of the plane.
Shortly after the incident, the highway, one of the busiest connections north of the Mexican capital, was closed "for security reasons,” according to the statement.
