Over 200 Schools Closed in South Korea Over MERS Outbreak

More than 200 schools were temporarily shut down on Wednesday in South Korea to prevent the spread of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), Education Minister Hwang Woo-yea said.

TOKYO (Sputnik) – The schools closed for a week are mostly located in the northwestern province of Gyeonggi, where the first of two MERS-related deaths were reported on Monday, according to the Education Ministry.

Earlier in the day, the country’s Ministry of Health and Welfare said that the number of confirmed MERS cases had grown to 30, while more than 1,300 people have been quarantined.
