BERLIN (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in an article published in the Globe and Mail newspaper that no one would have believed that 25 years after the end of the Cold War, the European world order would be put in doubt by the "annexation of Crimea."
"It is absolutely clear that we have no reasons to change our interpretation that has existed since the beginning of 2014. It’s an annexation. The annexation, which violates international law," Seibert said at a press briefing on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, commenting on Merkel’s remarks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the German Chancellor used incorrect terminology when referring to Crimea as having been annexed by Moscow instead of being reunified with Russia.
After Crimea and the special-status port city of Sevastopol signed a treaty of accession with Russia, the United States, the European Union and a number of their allies imposed economic sanctions against Moscow.
Russia has repeatedly refuted the allegations, and retaliated by introducing a year-long embargo on food imports from countries that imposed sanctions against it.
