MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The issue of former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi's death sentence will only be resolved after a long judicial process, current head of state Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said Wednesday.
Morsi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, and his allies face charges including espionage and inciting attacks on police facilities during a 2011 uprising against Egypt's then-president, Hosni Mubarak.
"This is only a court of the first instance, which will be followed by long legal proceedings… Let everything be in its due course,” Sisi told journalists in Berlin after talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Sisi said that he understood the negative stance taken by the Germans, as well as all other Europeans on capital punishment.
The Cairo criminal court has postponed the verdict in this current case for Morsi to June 16.
