WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Former Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee has announced he will run for the Democratic nomination for US President in 2016.
“Today, I am formally entering the race for the Democratic nomination for president," Chafee said on Wednesday at George Mason University in Virginia.
Chafee served in the US Senate from 1999 until 2007, and was the only Republican Senator to oppose the US war in Iraq in 2003.
Chafee said in his presidential announcement that the United States should make stronger efforts to work with Russia.
“I believe stronger efforts should be made to encourage Russian integration into the family of advanced industrial nations, with the objective of reducing tensions between Russia and its neighbors,” Chafee stated in the Wednesday announcement of his bid for president of the United States.
Chafee added that “waging peace includes negotiations,” and encouraged continued dialogue with Russia.
Chafee served two-terms in the US Senate as a Republican and is now running as Democrat for the 2016 US presidential nomination.
