WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States should adopt the metric system used by nearly the entire international community, Rhode Island State Governor and US presidential hopeful Lincoln Chafee said in his presidential announcement.
“Let’s join the rest of the world and go metric,” Chafee said in his first campaign speech on Wednesday at George Mason University in Virginia.
Chafee argued the switch to metric would be “a symbolic integration of ourselves into the international community after the mistakes of the last… fourteen years.”
Chafee also cited economic advantages for US scientists, exporters, and businesses who work with international partners.
The United States is one of only three countries that does not use the metric system.
Chafee is one of three other candidates seeking the 2016 Democratic nomination for president.
