Russia’s return to the Group of Seven – formerly eight – world leaders depends on the implementation of the Ukrainian peace deal, Germany’s Development Minister Gerd Mueller said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Minsk accords is a 13-point roadmap to bring peace to southeastern Ukraine that was hammered out in February 2015 in the Belarusian capital Minsk with mediation by Russian, German and French leaders.

"Russia’s reentry to the G8 is entirely in [Russian President] Vladimir Putin’s hands. The agreed Minsk accords must be implemented, and then he will have his place at the table back," Mueller told in an interview with German daily Passauer Neue Presse published Thursday.

German FM Steinmeier: We Need Russia Back in G8
At the height of the Ukrainian standoff in June 2014, G7 leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain and the United States bowed out of a planned trip to Russia for a Sochi summit and instead held a meeting in Brussels, Belgium.

They are due to gather this June 7-8 in Germany’s Bavaria, again without the Russian leader.

Commenting on the division, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that no one has the power to banish a nation from the Group since it is an informal club bringing together world leaders to discuss issues of mutual interest.
