WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — “Given the high concentration of soccer fans that will be in attendance at the meetings, I wouldn’t be surprised if it came up,” Earnest stated when asked whether the FIFA corruption scandal would be discussed at the G7 meetings.
FIFA’s top executives came under intense scrutiny last week after the US Department of Justice unsealed an indictment charging 14 defendants — among them nine high-ranking FIFA officials — with racketeering, money laundering, as well as taking about $150 million in bribes and kickbacks. Seven of the FIFA defendants were arrested in Zurich, Switzerland on a US federal corruption warrant.
FIFA’s President Sepp Blatter resigned just four days after he was reelected for a fifth term amid the corruption scandal.
The 41st G7 summit is scheduled to take place in the Bavarian Elmau Castle, outside Munich, on June 7-8, 2015. The G7 comprises the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States.
