WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Navy awarded US shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls more than $4 billion worth of contracts for finalizing the design and construction of the USS John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier, the US Defense Department stated in a press release.
“Huntington Ingalls… is being awarded a $3,352,611,760 fixed-price-incentive-firm target contract for all remaining detail design and construction (DD&C) efforts for aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy (CVN 79),” the release, issued on Friday, said.
Work on the aircraft carrier will be performed in Newport News, Virginia, and is expected to be complete by June 2022, according to the statement.
The USS John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) aircraft carrier is projected to have a 50-year service life. Another carrier of the same name, the USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67), was decommissioned in 2007 after nearly 40 years of service.
Huntington Ingalls is the United States’ largest military shipbuilding company, according to the company’s website.
