MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The United States is not intending to supply offensive weapons to Kiev, as it would not contribute to solution of the crisis in the country, White House Press Secretary Joshua Earnest said.
"The President’s view has not changed about, at this point, not providing additional offensive military assistance to Ukraine… providing additional offensive military capabilities to Ukraine, in the mind of the President, would only further escalate a situation that must be resolved diplomatically," Earnest told journalists Sunday at the G7 summit in Germany.
On May 15, US Congress passed a defense budget bill that will allocate $300 million in lethal defensive weapons for Ukraine government forces. US President Barack Obama has been reluctant to provide such assistance to Kiev.
In March, Washington said it would redeploy up to 300 military instructors from Italy to Yavoriv, near the Polish border, as part of a mission to train the Ukrainian National Guard.
