“Turkey's general election on June 7 took place with a record 86 percent turnout, a clear sign of strength of the Turkish democracy,” EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy Johannes Hahn said in a statement.
The EU officials stressed that the fact that all major political parties had obtained representation in the new parliament was particularly important.
“We now look forward to the swift formation of a new parliament and government, and to working together closely,” the statement stressed.
Preliminary election results showed that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) won 40.8 percent, or 256 seats, in parliament. Its main rival, the leftist Republican People's Party (CHP) gathered 25.2 percent, or 133 seats.
Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and pro-Kurdish People's Democratic Party (HDP) also passed the 10-percent threshold with 16.5 and 12.9 percent of the ballot, or 83 and 78 seats respectively.
The final results of Sunday's parliamentary elections are expected to be announced in about two weeks.
