WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Monday, the United States and 16 NATO allies conducted maritime drills as part of the 43rd BALTOPS, US Department of Defense said in a statement.
The maritime exercises are part of NATO’s Saber Strike 2015 drills taking place through June 20, 2015. The drills are taking place throughout Eastern Europe and the Baltics to enhance “interoperability and flexibility.”

US Department of Defense spokesman Army Colonel Steve Warren said the multinational drills will showcase NATO air defense, maritime interdiction, anti-submarine warfare and amphibious operations.

Russia has responded to NATO’s increased activity on its borders by organizing a number of large-scale military exercises. In the past year, Russia has conducted military drills in the Baltics, the Black Sea, the Mediterranean and the Arctic.
