MOSCOW (Sputnik) – In March, a review of the camp in Nauru, ordered by the Australian government in October 2014, revealed several dozen cases of sexual harassment and abuse of asylum seekers at the hands of detention center staff. Morrison, who is currently serving as social services minister, is said to have been aware of the situation as early as December 2013.
The Guardian said that the parliamentary investigation obtained evidence proving that Morrison was personally provided with information on a November 2013 incident in which a staff member abused an asylum seeker in the camp.
The immigration department regularly requested the camp’s medical personnel alter incident assessments, according to the inquiry.
In April, employees at the camp wrote an open letter, saying that Australian authorities had long been aware of the abuse of women and children in the camp and had done nothing to separate victims from perpetrators.
The Nauru Regional Processing Center was established under a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Australian and Nauruan governments in 2012.
