MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The flag that has a weight of 120 kilograms (about 265 pounds), will be raised by 300 students from higher educational institutions of the Russian Emergencies Ministry, the statement said.
"The main patriotic event dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory [over Nazi Germany] – Flag Parade — will take place in the Victory Park on Poklonnaya Hill. This day [Wednesday] will set a new national record for the largest flag of Russia," the organizers of the event said in a statement.
In addition to the flag rising, a birchwood planting ceremony will take place on Wednesday on Poklonnya Hill, one of the highest spots in Moscow. Birches will be planted in honor of Soviet World War II soldiers.
Both of the events are taking place ahead of Russia Day, the national holiday of the Russian Federation celebrated every year on June 12 since 1992. The date coincides with the day that the First Congress of People's Deputies of the Russian Federation adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic in 1990.
