The United States must ban deploying ground troops to fight the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, US Senator Chris Murphy said in a press release on Tuesday after introducing an amendment seeking to prevent potential deployment.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US armed forces currently has 3,000 troops in Iraq in a training capacity and continues to carry out airstrikes on Islamic State positions in Iraq and Syria.

“We must do everything within our power to aid our allies in the fight against ISIS [Islamic State] — including recognizing the fact that the presence of American ground troops cannot solve every problem.”

Murphy said the 2003 Iraq War resulted in the death of 5,000 Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, and also cost US citizens $1 trillion.

“It directly created the conditions that led to the Islamic State’s rise, and provided our enemies with the propaganda they needed to recruit more terrorists than we could kill.”

US Senators Brian Schatz, Tom Udall and Richard Blumenthal cosponsored Murphy’s amendment.
