A senior interior ministry security source told the Mena news agency that no tourists were injured in the attack. However, the Egyptian Masrawy news website cited security sources who said that dozens of wounded, including tourists, have been taken to hospital.
Luxor is a famous tourist destination in southern Egypt, visited by millions of people every year. The Karnak complex is a vast open-air museum and the second largest ancient religious site in the world. The attack was the first to target Luxor since November 1997, when Islamic militants opened fire on tourists killing 58.
