Russian Student Arrested in Turkey to Return to Moscow on Thursday -Embassy
19:51 GMT 10.06.2015 (Updated: 21:03 GMT 10.06.2015) A Russian female student, who had been detained in Turkey during an alleged attempt to join the Islamic State militant group, will return to Russia on Thursday, the Russian Embassy in Ankara said.
ANKARA (Sputnik) — Moscow State University student Varvara Karaulova, 19, was detained earlier in June on the border between Turkey and Syria while traveling with a group of foreigners allegedly recruited by Islamic radicals.
"Following our appeals to the Turkish authorities, the embassy has just received a notice from the Turkish Foreign Ministry informing us that Varvara Karaulova will be able to return to Russia on Thursday," embassy's press attache Igor Mityakov told RIA Novosti.
According to the embassy, Karaulova has been issued temporary travel papers as her Russian passport has been stolen.
The ISIL, in control of large swathes of Syrian and Iraqi territory, has recruited thousands of foreigners. The group’s propaganda on social networking websites especially targets young people.
At least 20,000 foreign fighters have joined the ISIL to date, according to US National Counterterrorism Center estimates.
In March, the governor of Turkey’s south-central province of Gaziantep stated that almost 60 Russian nationals have been on suspicion of connections with the Islamic State militant group.
