Greek State Broadcaster Back on Air After Two-Year Austerity Break

Greek state television and radio service ERT resumed broadcasting Thursday, precisely two years after it was shut down due to austerity cutbacks.

ATHENS (Sputnik) — The reopening of ERT, also known as the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation, was one of the electoral promises of the Greek anti-austerity party Syriza, which came to power in January.

All of ERT corporation's television and radio services were pulled off the air on June 11, 2013 after the conservative government, led by Antonis Samaras, accused the broadcaster of lacking transparency and, most importantly, of wasting financial resources.

“This is a special day – for us and for all those who value the freedom of information,” the ERT morning news presenters said.
