Russia, Egypt Navies Finish Active Phase of Naval Drills in Mediterranean

Four Russian ships and five Egyptian vessels arrived in the Egyptian port of Alexandria for the drills last week.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The naval phase of the first joint Russian-Egyptian naval drills in the Mediterranean Sea has ended, the press service of the Russia’s Black Sea Fleet said in a statement on Friday.

"The crews of the Russian Navy’s ships and the ships of the Navy of Egypt completed the naval phase of [their] joint maritime exercises in the south-eastern part of the Mediterranean, close to the coast of Egypt," the statement reads.

The fleet’s press service added that all of the tasks, set by the drill’s joint staff, have been successfully completed.

A total of four Russian vessels, including the Moskva guided missile cruiser and the Samum hoverborne guided missile corvette, arrived in the Egyptian port of Alexandria for the drills last week.

Egypt has sent five ships to the joint exercises, including the frigates Taba and Sharm El-Sheikh.

The first Russian-Egyptian naval drills, codenamed Friendship Bridge 2015, started on June 6 and will wrap on Sunday.
