Two days ago, members of the European Parliament (MEPs) came up with a tough resolution, calling the EU to re-consider its diplomatic relations with Russia in the context of the Ukrainian crisis.
The draft of the resolution was written based on a report of MEP Gabrielius Landsbergis of Lithuania.
"With its aggression against Ukraine and annexation of Crimea, the Russian leadership has put our policies at a crossroads. It's up to the Kremlin to decide now which way it will go — cooperation or deepening alienation," Landsbergis said.
Despite the attempts of UKIP and FN to block the senseless resolution, it was passed anyway by 494 votes against 135 votes and 69 abstentions.
Although disfavored by the ruling governments of their respective countries, it looks like UKIP and FN are the only ones who understand the absurdity behind the new resolution, especially considering that the European Parliament passed the bill without any factual proof behind their accusations.
Despite this, most MEPs seems to know better. The Ukrainian conflict has the potential to become worse this summer. A comprehensive peace agreement between major powers, including the EU and Russia, is needed to avoid the deterioration of the conflict. But instead, everyone in the European Parliament, except UKIP and FN members, is trying to undermine the possibility of a future dialogue between the EU and Russia.
