The Greek bailout talks hit a roadblock after they became political, prompting the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to drop out of consultations, a representative of the Greek government said Friday.

ATHENS (Sputnik) — On Thursday, IMF negotiators walked out of the talks, citing an alleged lack of progress. On Friday Greece said it was going to present new reform proposals in a bid to revive the stalled negotiations.

“According to IMF spokesman Gerry Rice, the IMF admitted that the talks in Brussels have become political, and the IMF doesn’t want to be a part of this,” the Greek official said, citing Rice as saying the fund was not a political organization.

He added this pointed to internal divisions inside the creditor institutions and the pressure that the IMF had to apply to the other two key money lenders – the European Commission and the European Central Bank (ECB) – to put them on the right track of technical negotiations.

Athens is currently in talks with its international creditors to unlock the final package of financial aid before the 2011 bailout program expires on June 30.

Greece's national debt stands at around $350 billion, of which $270 billion is owed to its three biggest lenders.
