The Russian sail training ship Kruzenshtern collided with two patrol vessels of the Islandic Coast Guard docked in Reykjavik Harbour.
The incident took place on June 11 when the ship was on her way out of the port.
The Kruzenshtern collided with the Coast Guard vessels – the Thor and the Tyr – during maneuvering operations. All the three ships were damaged. The collision resulted in two holes in the hull of one of the coastguard ships, a source told FlashNord news agency.
Further investigation will be conducted to fully assess the damage. Both coastguard ships are not seaworthy until necessary repairs are made.
According to the operations department for the Icelandic Coast Guard, they will seek an insurance payout from Kruzenshtern’s insurance company.
The Kruzensthern is a Russian four-masted barque that was built in 1926 in Germany, as the Padua. In 1946, it was handed over to the Soviet Navy as part of war reparations and renamed. She is one of the largest traditional sailing vessels in operation. The ship is used mainly for training purposes, with her home ports in Russia’s Kaliningrad and Murmansk.
