Russia Ready to Send 100 Rescuers to Georgia as Flood Claims Lives of 12

The death toll from the massive flood in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi has reached 12 people, the city’s Mayor Davit Narmania said Sunday. Russia is ready to deploy more than 100 rescuers to help Georgia provide relief.

TBILISI (Sputnik) — The mayor also said that some of the wild animals that escaped from the city zoo following the flooding are still on the loose.

"That’s why, I urge the residents of Tbilisi to refrain from moving around the city," Narmania warned.

A heavy rainstorm hit Tbilisi on Saturday evening, damaging power lines and causing multiple roads and buildings to collapse as floodwaters rushed through the capital. The area adjacent to the Kura (Mtkvari) River, including the city zoo, was flooded.

According to Tbilisi’s electricity distribution company's statement, the flood led to power supply being cut off to around 22,000 of its customers in the capital.

Authorities set up an emergency operations headquarters to deal with the aftermath of the flooding.

Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry is ready to deploy more than 100 rescuers to help Georgia provide relief following the deadly flooding, the ministry’s press service said Sunday.

"Head of Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry Vladimir Puchkov has sent an official letter to Georgia’s interior minister to extend his condolences over the deaths following the disaster and offer help in flood relief [efforts]."

The statement added that Russia was ready to dispatch over 100 rescuers and two transport aircraft carrying equipment needed to conduct search and rescue operations and provide relief.
