WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The US Navy’s submarine launched Trident Ballistic Missile program in Cape Canaveral, Florida will significantly increase its workforce, the US defense contractor Lockheed Martin said on Monday.
“Lockheed Martin employment at Cape Canaveral, Florida, will grow by more than 20 percent by 2017, with the addition of 130 jobs to support the US Navy’s Trident II D5 Fleet Ballistic Missile program,” announced Florida Governor Rick Scott at the Paris Air Show in France.
Lockheed already has 500 engineers and technicians at the US Navy’s missile facility in Cape Canaveral, one of four sites in the US used to test unarmed Trident missiles.
The Trident is a submarine launched ballistic missile that can carry multiple nuclear warheads to strike several targets upon reentry.
Deployed on the US Ohio class submarine, the Trident forms a key element of the United States nuclear triad.
