In September, US President Barack Obama ranked Russia’s “aggression” in Europe second in a list of threats, after the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa.

"I wouldn't use that term", Tefft said, speaking at a "Pioneer Readings" event in Moscow.

However, Tefft added that “many Americans believe that what Russia has done in Ukraine is a very very serious threat,” and underscored the importance of adhering to the Minsk agreements.

Relations between Russia and the West deteriorated over the Ukraine crisis. The West accuses Moscow of fuelling the internal Ukrainian conflict, imposing several rounds of sanctions against it.

Russia has repeatedly denied the allegations and has actively participated in international efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
