Russia’s S-300 Missiles in Iran May Alter Power Balance in Middle East
KUBINKA (Moscow Region) (Sputnik) Moscow and Tehran are holding talks on recalling Iran’s lawsuit against Russia for failing to deliver S-300 air defense systems, a source familiar with the situation said Tuesday.

“Currently, the Russian and Iranian sides are discussing resuming the implementation of the S-300 delivery contract. Russian officials insist on the withdrawal of the lawsuit and the signing of a new contract,” the source told RIA Novosti at the international Army-2015 exhibition near Moscow.

Russia and Iran initially signed a deal for the delivery of five S-300s in 2007. Its implementation was halted by Moscow after the UN Security Council issued an arms embargo on Tehran due to nuclear weapon concerns.

In April, Moscow lifted the ban on S-300 deliveries, shortly after the P5+1 group of international negotiators and Iran reached a framework nuclear agreement.

Israel criticized Russia’s decision to go ahead with arms deliveries to Iran, stating that it сould increase tensions in the region.

Washington, a long-time ally of Israel, stated that it was surprised the delivery was halted so long, as the defensive S-300s were not covered by the arms embargo.
