DONETSK (Sputnik) — Russian journalist Pavel Kanygin has been sent home from southeastern Ukraine, a source in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) said Tuesday.
Reports emerged that Kanygin, a special correspondent covering the Donbass region for the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta, had been detained in Donetsk earlier in the day.
The outlet reported that local authorities suspect Kanygin of working for a Ukrainian publication instead of Novaya Gazeta, citing the fact that another Ukrainian reporter's business card had been found on his person.
"He is crossing the Russian border at the moment. I do not know why he was detained," the source told RIA Novosti, adding that Kanygin appeared to have been unharmed.
