Over 1.3Mln Ukrainians Internally Displaced by Armed Conflict
MOSCOW (Sputnik) The 2014 record number of 59.5 million displaced persons shows an 8.3-million increase from 2013, representing the largest single-year leap to date, the report said.

Over the past five years, 15 major conflicts have begun, renewed or worsened in the world, including eight in Africa, three in both the Middle East and in Asia, and one in Europe, the report said. These conflicts prompted a flight of 42,500 people each day in 2014.

Worldwide, one in 122 people is either internally or externally displaced and over 50 percent are children, according to the study.

A total of 126,800 refugees able to return to their homes in 2014 is the lowest figure in 31 years, research revealed.

The Syrian conflict is responsible for the highest refugee population in the world, with over 11 million people displaced since the beginning of the country's civil war in 2011, the United Nations said.

Researchers predict the situation will worsen in the coming years.
