NEW YORK (Sputnik) — A resident of New Jersey was arrested and charged with providing support to ISIL, US Attorney Paul Fishman said in a statement on Thursday.
“Samuel Rahamin Topaz, 21, of Fort Lee, New Jersey, was arrested at his home on June 17, 2015, and is charged by complaint with one count of conspiring with others in New Jersey and New York to provide services and personnel to [ISIL],” Fishman said.
Furthermore, in April 2015, Topaz allegedly made plans to leave the United States “to travel to reach [ISIL] by transiting through intermediary countries.”
“Providing fighters and resources to a terrorist organization like [ISIL] is a threat to our country and its citizens,” Fishman said. “We will continue to use all the tools at our disposal to disrupt the efforts of those who are trying to do harm at home and abroad.”
Prosecutors claim they obtained hundreds of recorded phone calls and text messages that will be submitted as evidence.
An alleged coconspirator, Munther Omar Saleh, was arrested on Saturday.
If convicted, Topaz faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.
