The meeting of eurozone member-state leaders to be held on Monday is a positive step toward an agreement between Athens and its creditors, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said in a statement on Friday.

ATHENS (Sputnik) — On Thursday, President of the European Council Donald Tusk said that an urgent summit on Greece would be held on June 22 after negotiations between Greece and its international creditors earlier in the day had failed.

"Meeting of the governments’ leaders on Monday is a positive development on the way to an agreement. We were seeking the final negotiations to take place at the highest political level in Europe, and now we are working for the success of this summit," Tsipras said.

"Those who invest in the crisis and in the scenario of horror will be disappointed."

The prime minister added that the sides would work together to walk the line between following European Union rules and respecting democratic principles, to support Greece to resume economic growth inside the eurozone.

Athens and its three main creditors — the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund — are attempting to reach a new agreement on Greece's debt before the expiry of its current bailout program on June 30.

Greece is undergoing a deep economic crisis. Its overall state debt stands at some $350 billion, of which $270 billion is owed to its three major international lenders.
