Charleston Gunman Charged With Nine Counts of Murder in Church Shooting
14:32 GMT 19.06.2015 (Updated: 14:41 GMT 19.06.2015) The white 21-year-old gunman arrested for fatally shooting nine African Americans at a Charleston, South Carolina church has been charged with nine counts of murder and procession of a firearm, the local police department announced on Friday.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – Roof confessed to murdering the nine churchgoers at the historic black Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church earlier on Friday.
“Dylann Roof…charged with 9 counts of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime,” the Charleston Police Department said via Twitter.
He reportedly shouted racist remarks about African Americans before opening fire on the congregation on Wednesday night.
Roof was arrested by police on Thursday in Shelby, North Carolina, 200 miles from the crime scene.
The US Department of Justice has launched a hate crime probe into the incident.
