During a press conference which was held in light of the Yemen peace talks in Geneva, a fistfight broke out between the supporters of Sunni elements and the Houthi forces.
The talks turned violent when the Houthi delegation was verbally attacked by the opponent faction, with terms “dogs” and “criminals” being shouted out loud. There were also accusations of “killing the children of south Yemen.” Following that a fistfight erupted, media reported.
It started when the head of the Houthi delegation – Hamza Al-Houthi – was attacked by a woman who threw a shoe at him. Al-Houthi, however, is said to have stayed composed throughout the entire situation.
Soon the violence escalated with protesters attacking the Houthi sympathizers. In the end, the attackers had to be ushered out.
The situation in Yemen continues to deteriorate. The fighting is ongoing, with tribal sources reporting 30 dead on Thursday, while the weekend deadline for an agreement between the rival groups is fast approaching.
So far no progress whatsoever has been reached on the ceasefire that the UN has been promoting.
