The Czech Foreign Ministry may have to close down up to 45 diplomatic missions abroad if it does not see its budget markedly increased next year, local media reported on Friday, referring to a report the ministry plans to submit to the government.

This year and next the ministry will be short of over 400 million and 900 million Kč, ($16.5 and $37.2 million) respectively due to the weak Czech crown, the admission of new staff and the opening of new missions abroad, Právo daily newspaper wrote.

The most pessimistic scenario speaks of the necessary closure of up to 45 smaller missions abroad and the dismissal of 270 employees.

The previous government closed down several Czech missions in 2010 for austerity reasons.

The closed missions were the embassies in Yemen, DR Congo, Costa Rica and Venezuela, and the general consulate in Mumbai, India.

The austerity measures proposed by the ministry include slashing the budgets of the country’s missions abroad, cutting down the number of business trips, and other belt-tightening measures.
