BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — Dutch Minister of Finance Dijsselbloem announced his candidacy for a second two-and-a-half year term as a head of the Eurogroup earlier in June. Dijsselbloem assumed the post in January 2013, replacing Jean-Claud Juncker who is now head of the European Commission.
"Spanish Minister of Finance is the competitor of [the current Eurogroup head] Jeroen Dijsselbloem," a source said, adding that de Guindos had run for the Eurogroup presidency previously.
The Eurogroup currently has 19 members. It exercises political control over the currency and related aspects of the European Union’s monetary union.
