WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Wednesday, the Senate voted 60 to 38 to send the TPA to be signed by President Barack Obama.
The legislation fast-tracks the US president's authority to negotiate free trade agreements without the Congress being able to amend them.
“TPP is absolutely not a foregone conclusion.”
The TPP negotiations have been ongoing for the past decade, but the contents of the prospective agreement have not been made public.
Brown described the current outline of the TPP as “another trade agreement that costs US jobs.”
The Senate also approved legislation for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) that must be sent back to the House of Representatives.
TAA guarantees subsidies for US workers who lose their jobs as a result of free-trade agreements. President Obama has stated he will not sign a fast-track bill without the TAA.
