The US assessment of the human rights situation in Russia is biased and distorts reality, Russian Foreign Ministry's Human Rights Ombudsman Konstantin Dolgov said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Thursday, the US State Department released an annual human rights report, in which Russia was listed among the countries violating civil rights, including through the imprisonment of journalists and political activists who are critical of the government.

Dolgov told the Rossiya 24 TV channel later in the day that the US report does not have sufficient factual backing.

"As for Russia, the [human rights] situation is traditionally exposed to very wordy criticism by the authors of the report. Again, one-sided, cut off from reality, from the facts… assessment of the situation with the civil society in our country," the ombudsman said.

"It seems that some paragraphs [of the report] are copy-pasted each year, the negativity adds, but the methodology does not change."

The US State Department publishes a report on human rights in the world every year. It gives estimates of the human rights situation across the globe based on information provided by experts and representatives of US embassies in various countries.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has stated that the level of cooperation between the United States and international mechanisms monitoring human rights is unsatisfactory.
