WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The airstrikes targeted Islamic State fighting positions, excavators, vehicles and tactical units, according to the Facebook page.
“In Syria, coalition military forces conducted 14 airstrikes using bomber, fighter and remotely piloted aircraft,” the joint Task Force stated. “Separately in Iraq, coalition military forces conducted 14 airstrikes approved by the Iraqi Ministry of Defense using attack, bomber and fighter aircraft against ISIL [Islamic State] terrorists.”
The air attacks were a part of Operation Inherent Resolve, whose goal is to eliminate the Islamic State, according to the Joint Task Force.
The coalition expanded the air attacks to Syria in September 2014, albeit without approval from the Syrian government.
The Islamic State is a militant jihadist group that has taken over large parts of Iraq and Syria and been making attempts to branch to other countries as well.
On Tuesday, the United Nations announced at least three million people in Iraq have been displaced by Islamic State fighting and violence.
