Many of those who attend the Islamic Cultural Center are cab drivers. Before running off to work, picking up residents and visitors to the Big Apple, the cabbies take their cars to the mosque but, with limited parking spaces in the area, double parking is pretty much a requirement for anyone who wants to make morning prayers.
That hasn’t been a problem for awhile.
Zaman, himself, was greeted with an orange envelope containing a fine of $115. It was his first in nine years of attending the mosque.
“I can’t help but to think they are being prejudiced,” he said. “They don’t understand. We have to be here.”
Ramadan is being observed from June 17 through July 17.
An NYPD spokesman told the New York Post that they never give exceptions for double parking because of the hazards associated with it. However, another source at the local precinct denied there had been a targeted blitz that day.
