MOSCOW (Sputnik), Alexander Mosesov — Bruges Group Director Robert Oulds claimed that NATO is conceptually similar to the unified EU army proposed in March by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker as a threat-response tool.
"NATO has become the military wing of an aggressively expanding European Union, which both complement each other in geopolitical ambitions," Oulds said.
A recent poll, conducted by ICM Research for Sputnik and released Tuesday, revealed that less than 20 percent of Britons thought that it was a good idea for Europe to have its own army.
"They [EU and NATO] really serve the same interests – that is expansion of power, their centralization and the geopolitical project to expand into the post-Soviet space," Oulds said.
NATO has been building up its military presence in Eastern Europe since the start of the Ukraine conflict last year. Moscow has accused the West of using the Ukrainian crisis as a pretext to expand its influence in the region.
