MADRID (Sputnik) — About 30 protests were held in Spain on Tuesday, a day before the the Public Security Law, dubbed the "gag law" by its opponents, enters into force.
In late March, the Spanish Parliament approved the law, which, among other provisions, introduces large fines for holding unauthorized or illegal protests, which represent a threat to the security of citizens, prohibits Spaniards from making video recordings or photographing police and their activities and allows harsh punishment for those citizens deemed to be resisting arrest.
According to the protesters, the law "implies the most significant decrease of the citizens' rights since the restoration of democracy in Spain."
The most heated debate revolved around the provision allowing authorities to perform immediate deportation from the territory of Spain, of the migrants, who illegally crossed the border, without giving them the opportunity to apply for asylum.
The protests organized by social movements and left-wing parties were held across Spain throughout the day, with Greenpeace activists, climbed a crane in front of the Congress building in Madrid, being first to express their discontent with the law.
